More "iron" history
STARMAN CANDY BARS were originally made in Manhattan Beach, Ca. by Dave Manning and Herbert Stark. Their first attempt @ making lures was to try and modify bone jigs. Then they tried plastic w/out success. Instead they started casting lures w/ their first model being the single hook Starman 101. The starman candy bar 110 single hook followed. The 112 was the treble hook version of the 110. Note that the 1st candy bar jigs were designed and tested by Captain Dick Shaver aboard the Hornet out of pierpoint landing in Long Beach in 1952. The jigs were intoduced in a See's candy box(hence the name). The jigs went on the market in 1953(101 &110). In late 53' the 150 was introduced. 56' brought the 112 and 57' the 200.
RODDY LURES were made by Roddy Rod Co. in gardena and manufactured from 58' to 66'. The Roddy Rod Co. was owned by Harry and Jerry Rodstein.
BALDY LURES were designed to copy the bone jigs by Walter Rocker and Ted Ponting in the mid 40's. They were built in Newport Beach and Costa Mesa. In 52' a fire destroyed the Costa Mesa facility were the molds were. Attempts were made to continue but things were never the same. The el pescador and the M.R. Petter were later copies.
HACKER LURES were made by Ray Hacker in his garage in Artesia, Ca. Ray later purchased the Gimmet & JR lures from Newport Beach and were added to his series.
BARRACUDA JOE & MOOREHOUSE were owned by Joe(only name known) & Moorehouse. The lure began in 1934 and continued into the 40's.
PUTTER LURES came from Santa Monica and were made by Jim Putter. Made for his own commercial fishing originally. The Putter was one of the first aluminum alloy jigs to be molded. The Putter was a copy of the early Bone Jig. Putter was later sold to Clyde Goto.
SCHNABBLE LURES were made by Clydes Manufacturing Co. in Los Angeles and were also owned by Clyde Goto. Made in the early 50's the first jigs were stamped and later jigs have the name in the mold.
CLYDES & CLYDES CLOBBER also made by Goto and started in the 50's and were stamped in the beginning and molded later.
SNAKE & CHARMER were made in a standard size and a jr. size. They were made in Compton by Reilly Lee in the mid 50's.
SPOOFER LURE AND TACKLE in Los Angeles was started in 1953 by John Perkins. The 1st baits were single hook. Spoofer also owned and manufactured the monster, maverick, outlaw, cinco and vip.
STREAMLINED DODGER & RODGER DODGER date back to the 30's. They became popular in the 50's and were made by Metal Specialties Co. of Santa Monica. The company was owned by Barney Killian who also owned Lincoln-Pico sporting goods.
TADY LURES was started in 1964 by Tady Shimizu in Los Angeles. Tady 1 was the first lure produced.
M.R. PETTER Lures were made by Petter in Inglewood, Ca. throughout the 1950's.
